Overview

Surgical Physician Assistant (PA)

Location: St. Mary’s General Hospital, Passaic, NJ

Department: Surgery

Reports To: Chief of Surgery / Attending Surgeon

Job Type: Full-Time

Job Summary

St. Mary’s General Hospital is seeking a dedicated and experienced Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) to join our surgical team. The PA will work closely with attending surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide exceptional perioperative care. This position involves assisting in surgeries, pre- and post-operative patient management, and performing procedures under physician supervision in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • First assist in the operating room across a range of surgical specialties (e.g., general, vascular, orthopedic, bariatric, etc.)
  • Conduct pre-operative assessments and histories.
  • Manage post-operative care including rounding, wound management, and discharge planning.
  • Perform bedside procedures such as central line placement, wound closure, and drain removals.
  • Respond to surgical consults in the ER and inpatient units.
  • Participate in trauma response as part of the surgical team.
  • Document patient care in EMR accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Participate in on-call and weekend coverage rotation.

Qualifications

Benefits may vary based on employment status, i.e. full-time, part-time, per diem or temporary. A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $120,000-140,000 on an annualized basis. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current New Jersey PA license (or eligibility).
  • NCCPA Certification required.
  • BLS and ACLS certification required; ATLS preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of surgical PA experience preferred (new grads with strong surgical rotations considered).
  • Proficiency in EMR systems (e.g., Meditech, Epic).
  • Excellent communication and clinical decision-making skills.
